Brands/Company Names Inspired by the Greek and Roman Mythology

If I have to recall the previous lessons I had listened and studied, one of the most important things to form a business is for the owner to think of a company name. Of course, we have to give names in order to be recognized and remembered. We can't just say: "Oh, there's that one shop that I really like." There are other shops around the world and it would be too much of a hassle to look around just to remember that shop you like, right? That's why businessmen give names for their businesses--it's like naming a baby. It has to be simple, unique and memorable at the same time.

Names that are created are mostly inspired and have a special meaning behind it. One of the inspirations that I found out that most businessmen use are coming from Mythology. In this blog, I will list down a few of the company names that I had stumbled or researched upon that are greatly inspired by Mythology. (Note: There are also logos inspired heavily by Mythology and of course, I have to bring those up as well.)

I'm going to start off with Nike. Most people recognized Nike is the American Company that is famous for its phrase "Just Do It" with a check mark as their logo. Nike is famous for their sports apparels and mostly for their shoes (Nike user here!). After I had gained a few knowledge of Greek Mythology, I realized that the name Nike has another meaning as well. Nike is the goddess of victories. Realization dawned through me on why the company Nike was named after the goddess. The company wanted their users to be victorious in the activities they'll be doing hence the reason why it was named after the goddess of victories herself. It all made sense after I had researched the meaning of it. If we wear the company's product, perhaps we will be victorious in our daily activities as if the Goddess of Victory has blessed us herself.

When the name "Hermes" comes to mind, luxurious bags (that only people with tons of cash can buy it without their wallets being empty) and luscious scarves and fashion. The company Hermes is named after the owner's surname which is Thierry Hermes.

Hermes (not Thierry) is the Messenger of the Gods in Greek Mythology. He is associated with thieves, shepherds, athletes and merchants. The logo is similar to one of the meanings of Hermes, because he is the god of 'transition' and when I think of transition, it means 'moving'. In the logo, there is horse and a chariot (or is it carriage?) presented and for me, it relates to transition because horses move fast (like Hermes).

Although, this one would be deemed as 'highly inappropriate' but I had to list this one because of the relation towards Greek Mythology (and what's so inappropriate about protection?). If we know the story Iliad, Troy was one of the main places mentioned in there. If you live in Troy, you will be called as a Trojan. Troy was destroyed when they fell of a trap thinking it was a gift but no, it brought disaster in their kingdom. Oddly enough, the Trojan brand is used to protect all of us from gifts that are highly dangerous aka unwanted horses conquering walls.

Another thing about Trojan is the virus in our computers: 'Trojan Horse'. In Greek Mythology, the Horse was the gift that fooled the Trojans and destroyed Troy. In our computers, Trojan Horse is a virus that is lurking somewhere and destroying our important files just like the Greek Trojan Horse destroying Troy.

"Stronger than dirt!" That is the Ajax Cleanser's famous tagline formed by the Colgate-Palmolive company in 1947. You would be looking at me in confusion why it is related to Mythology. Well, in the Trojan War, there is a warrior named Ajax who is known for his strength. He is known who "cleaned up" the Trojan War. Funny enough, the product in the modern era is known for cleaning up dirt. Due to the cleanser's strength (just like the warrior), it can kill tons of germs in our household that we have created in our homes. Maybe we should use the cleanser after our battle in the bathroom. Hmm.

I have to hold back in my hyena-like screams for this.

We all know about Apollo in Greek Mythology. He is the god of music, sun, poetry, art and many, many things. He is the most handsome god in Greek Mythology too.

Located in New York city, there is a theater named "Apollo Theater". Theaters are known for shows that consists of music and the like. So it is no doubt why the theater is named after the god of music himself. Apollo is known for music and so is the theater in New York.

Wine is a drink that we all take in fancy restaurants or the type of drink to use during celebrations or the drink we see in the television every time a chic yet fierce character does some evil plot. Dionysus Winery and Spirits is one of the brands in winery. We can relate this in Greek Mythology by knowing the god of wine himself, Dionysus. Of course, the winery is no doubt named after the god of wine himself.  Dionysus is also the god of pleasure, in which people take pleasure in drinking wines.

These are only a few of the brands and names relating towards Greek Mythology. Most of them had no meaning or had no relation towards mythology.  And no, I am not sponsored by these products. (Though it'd be lovely if they did, maybe they'd bring me in some extra cash.)
